Kathleen Shafer is a self-described aviation nerd. Her mother was a flight attendant for United Airlines for 31 years and her uncle was a pilot for Delta Airlines. In this way, Kathleen grew up in the industry and flew space available as much as she could until her 25th birthday, when she aged out of that benefit. Her love of photography intersected with her love of travel and at some point in her twenties, she noticed that when she traveled she was photographing the airports she traveled through more than the destinations she visited. Thus began a project to photograph various active and abandoned airports, as well as ancillary spaces like airplane graveyards. Most of these images were shot on a Toyo-View 4×5 land camera.
